Franklin Area Guide
Franklin combines the rich historical heritage of a fascinating Civil War site with the sophistication and refinement of a bustling 21st Century metropolis!
It has grown over its century long history from a small agricultural town to a prominent suburban utopia, and currently boasts fine dining, a robust shopping district, and a thriving arts scene!
History
The lush city of Franklin, Tennessee, was founded in 1799 by State Senator Abram Maury and named for founding forefather and American legend Benjamin Franklin!
The first house built in the residential paradise was a log cabin erected by Ewen Cameron, who emigrated from Scotland and established a line of descendants that have lived in Franklin ever since!
The county in which Franklin sits was also named for a member of the Continental Congress; close Franklin ally Dr. Hugh Williamson.
Franklin quickly became renowned for its beauty and fertility, leading the tranquil plantation community to become one of the wealthiest in the south.
During the Civil War, the area’s economy was greatly weakened as Franklin played host to factions of both armies. In November of 1864, the Battle of Franklin was fought, which proved to be one of the most costly battles of the war by claiming over eight-thousand casualties.
The wide-scale devastation of the war turned the gorgeous antebellum plantation houses of the region into hospital wards for wounded soldiers.
By the early 19th Century, Franklin began to rise once again to prominence, and is currently the ninth largest city in Tennessee as well as being one of the fastest growing in the state!
Franklin melds equal parts small-town charm and big-city opportunity! Known as the “heart of Williamson,” it offers gorgeous natural beauty, untold Southern gentility, and unparalleled warmth!
