Brentwood Area Guide

Welcome home to the incredible community of Brentwood, Tennessee! Located just minutes from the sprawling metropolis of downtown Nashville, Brentwood is an area steeped in rich history bustling with economic growth and cultural significance!

History

Brentwood’s earliest settlers arrived in the late 1700’s following the Revolutionary War, after which a majority of the land was granted to soldiers by the state of North Carolina.

By the mid-1800’s, Brentwood had grown into a prosperous agrarian community amongst the richest in the state due to its rich soil and flourishing plantations.

During the American Civil War, many of the antebellum homes built during the economic boom were used as housing and medical units for soldiers of both the Union and Confederate Forces.

Following the Civil War, much of the area’s rich resources had been depleted which led to a weakening in the economy.

In the early decades of the Twentieth Century, Brentwood rebounded as plantation homes became a hot commodity again for purchase and restoration. In the 1960’s, this recovery was fueled even more by the construction of interstate highways.

It was at this time that residential development began, converting the sprawling farm lands to highly evolved subdivisions of beautiful homes. Due to its proximity to nearby Nashville, Brentwood soon became a booming suburban paradise, featuring homes valued at over a million dollars!

In 1969, Brentwood incorporated as a city in order to better facilitate allocation of resources and accountability over its infrastructure and development.

In 1971, the first police department was founded and the county commission expanded from three to five commissioners.

Throughout the seventies, road and infrastructure were continually improved, and in 1983 a Public Library was established in the Buchanan House on Franklin Road.

In the intervening years, Brentwood has continued to expand its local government and improve its services while growing steadily in population and warmth!
